Renting For Business

2 04 2007

I’ll be Honest when i started my business(a cyber cafe/gaming centre) I didn’t know if it would work, it was my first business and I was a little green, but 3 years later and we’re still going, just turning a profit.

Locally there have been a lot of major road works preventing a large portion of our customers access to the town(without a 30 mile diversion or an hours queing) so profits have been down quite a lot but we can see a way forward were planning for when the works are completed with courses and events in the pipelines to boost numbers and profits. On Saturday morning we recieved a letter from our landlord at the works premises telling us that we have 30 days to vacate, they are giving us 30 days to allow time to relocate etc.

With property in the area getting very expensive it is highly unlikely that we will find anyway in 30 days that fits in out budget so because I cant afford to buy a premises and had to rent my business closes. His reason “To Renovate”, 3 years and not so much as a light bulb changed or a floorboard fixed I find this hard to believe, he just wants it back because he needs it for his own business, which is fine but a little honesty would have been appreciated.

Thankfully there is only my fiancee and myself dependant upon the business so no one else looses a job but still it is quite a shock. I have made a lot of friends through the business and regret not being able to continue but life is all about change, I’m moving the office back to the home, reducing costs and concentrating on web design and private/corporate tuition.

I have learned not to rely on renting a property and will seriously look at buying for my next premises.
